Most writing about modernist poster design lists the principles as if they were interchangeable. They are not. Hear us out. A twelve-column grid at A2 does work a three-column grid at A5 cannot, and a diagonal at reading distance means something a diagonal on a phone screen does not. The Bauhaus preliminary course, taught first by Itten in Weimar from 1919 and later reshaped by Albers and Moholy-Nagy in Dessau after 1925, spent its opening weeks on this exact question: which formal rule applies, at what scale, under what light. We will walk three hypothetical briefs and do the arithmetic on each.

The rule we will use throughout for legibility is the standard one taught since the German rail typographers of the 1930s and still used in signage codes today: minimum cap height in millimetres equals reading distance in millimetres divided by roughly 200. That figure encodes an angular subtense of about seventeen arc-minutes, comfortable for a moving reader with average acuity. It is not a Bauhaus formula. But it is the number the Bauhaus preliminary course would have arrived at if it had bothered to write one down, because it treats form as a function of scale and viewing conditions, which is exactly what the preliminary course was for.

Scenario 1: The Theatre Poster on an A2 Sheet

Imagine a brief for a repertory theatre. Sheet size A2, four hundred and twenty millimetres by five hundred and ninety-four. Print run six hundred, wheat-pasted to columns and hoardings in a city centre. The reader is walking past at roughly one and a half metres per second, at a distance that averages two metres from the paper. Dwell time before the reader is out of the poster's angular cone is about one and a half seconds.

Start with the type. Reading distance two thousand millimetres, divided by two hundred, gives a minimum cap height of ten millimetres for the primary information — the play title, the dates. Ten millimetres converts to roughly twenty-eight point in metal type, or thirty-six point set generously with breathing room. Secondary information, the venue and cast, can run at half that: five millimetres, fourteen point. Below that, at this distance and dwell time, characters begin to collapse into shape.

Now the grid. A twelve-column grid on A2, allowing twenty-millimetre margins and six-millimetre gutters, produces a column width of twenty-six point two millimetres. That is narrow enough to hold a two-word phrase per line at fourteen point, wide enough to hold a six-word phrase across three columns at the same size. Twelve columns is not a design flourish. It is the largest number that still yields legible column widths at this sheet size. A sixteen-column grid on A2 gives columns of nineteen millimetres, which will not hold the venue address on one line. A six-column grid gives fifty-eight-millimetre columns, which are too wide for editorial hierarchy and reduce the composition to a poster-as-page rather than a poster-as-object.

The diagonal is where this scenario earns its poster. A single ruling line at forty-five degrees across A2 covers seven hundred and twenty-eight millimetres. At two metres, that line subtends an angle of twenty degrees, which is inside the foveal sweep of a reader who has already committed one saccade to the sheet. A diagonal at this scale does work a horizontal cannot: it moves the eye from the title block in the upper left to the date block in the lower right without a return saccade. Measured on the grid, the diagonal is not decoration. It is a two hundred-millisecond time saving on a one-and-a-half-second reading opportunity, which is thirteen per cent of the available attention.

The studio's own composition Archway, with its nested arcs rising from the base, works at A2 for the same measured reason. The concentric bands, each around thirty-five millimetres wide at this scale, sit comfortably above the ten-millimetre minimum but below the width at which a band reads as a plane rather than a stroke. Halve the sheet and those bands collapse into noise.

Scenario 2: The Editorial Spread Facing a Photograph

Picture the second brief as a design magazine spread. Left page typography, right page a full-bleed black-and-white photograph. Trim size A4, two hundred and ninety-seven millimetres wide per page, five hundred and ninety-four across the spread. Reading distance approximately four hundred millimetres, the standard for held print. Dwell time indefinite, but the eye's first three saccades decide whether the reader continues.

Apply the same formula. Four hundred divided by two hundred equals two millimetres minimum cap height, which is roughly five and a half point. That is below body copy comfort. Body copy at held distance runs nine to eleven point, which is a three and a half millimetre cap. The formula gives us the floor; typographic convention supplies the working number.

The grid decision is where scenario two departs from scenario one. On a single A4 page, a twelve-column grid produces columns of eighteen millimetres — narrower than any reasonable line length. A three-column grid, with ten-millimetre outer margins and five-millimetre gutters, yields columns of eighty-two millimetres. At ten point set solid, that column holds about fifty-five characters per line, which is at the top of the accepted forty-five to seventy-five character range for continuous reading. Three columns is not a stylistic preference at A4. It is the arithmetic maximum before line length breaks.

The photograph on the facing page changes every subsequent decision. A full-bleed image at A4 subtends an angle of thirty-six degrees at four hundred millimetres reading distance. That is beyond the foveal cone. The eye cannot see the whole image at once; it must saccade. The typographic left page must therefore anchor the reading order, because the photograph will not. This is where Moholy-Nagy's work at the Dessau print workshop after 1925 becomes practically relevant: he taught that photography, once introduced to a spread, absorbs all remaining visual weight, and that type must be built as a counter-weight, not a caption.

Measured counter-weight, on this spread, means the typographic column must occupy at least forty per cent of the left page area to hold its own. Less than that and the eye drifts right and stays there. A single centred column of eighty-two millimetres on a two hundred and ninety-seven-millimetre page occupies twenty-eight per cent of the page width — insufficient. A two-column block occupies fifty-six per cent — sufficient. The three-column grid is used, but only two columns carry text. The third is white space, which reads as intentional silence, not omission. The studio's composition Ascending Forms, with its measured rectangles climbing the frame, functions at this scale for the same reason: proportion becomes the argument once photography is in the room.

Scenario 3: The Wayfinding Board Read at Twelve Metres

Let us say the third brief is a transport terminal information board, mounted at head height, read by a moving crowd from an average of twelve metres. Board size twelve hundred by eight hundred millimetres. Dwell time under one second per glance, but repeated glances across a fifteen-metre approach.

Twelve thousand millimetres divided by two hundred gives a minimum cap height of sixty millimetres. In display type that is one hundred and seventy point, set at a stroke width of about eight millimetres if the face is medium weight. This is not a poster in the theatre sense. It is a signal.

The grid collapses. On an eight-hundred-millimetre board, a sixty-millimetre cap height plus generous descender and leading budget of thirty millimetres consumes ninety millimetres per line. That is eleven per cent of the board height. Eight lines maximum, and only if lines are stripped to essentials. A twelve-column grid at this scale is meaningless because the reader cannot resolve a twelve-column division at twelve metres — the angular subtense of a single column, one hundred millimetres wide, is under half a degree, at the limit of gestalt grouping. The board reduces to three functional zones stacked vertically: identification, destination list, direction arrow.

The diagonal fails here. A diagonal element at twelve metres, unless it is at least six hundred millimetres long, subtends an angle below three degrees and reads as a smudge, not a line. Wayfinding at long distance is horizontal and vertical only. This is the point at which the Bauhaus principle "form follows scale" becomes literal: the same diagonal that saves two hundred milliseconds on the theatre poster wastes a full glance on the wayfinding board because the reader must decode it before parsing the information.

Colour behaviour also shifts. Josef Albers, teaching colour in Dessau from 1923 onwards and later at Black Mountain, spent years demonstrating that adjacent colours modify one another perceptually — a red beside green appears more saturated than the same red on grey. At two metres, that interaction is visible and useful. At twelve metres, chromatic simultaneous contrast collapses below the perceptual threshold; only value contrast (light against dark) survives. Which is why terminal signage is black on yellow, white on green, black on white — never coloured pair against coloured pair. The studio composition Foundation, with its primary-colour circles and bars, works as a poster at reading distance and fails as wayfinding at twelve metres for a reason that is not stylistic but optical.

What All Three Share

Three scenarios, three sets of numbers, one underlying rule. Every modernist poster principle that still works today works because it is a function of viewing distance, dwell time, and available angular resolution — not because the Bauhaus said so.

The grid is not a style. The grid is the arithmetic partition of a sheet into the maximum number of columns that still permit a legible line of type at the intended viewing distance. Twelve columns at A2, three at A4, none at twelve metres. The diagonal is not a style. The diagonal is a saccade shortcut valid only when the diagonal itself is resolvable at the viewing angle. The colour interaction is not a style. It is a perceptual effect that operates within a distance envelope and vanishes outside it.

This is what the preliminary course taught. Itten's opening weeks in Weimar, and the reshaped course under Albers and Moholy-Nagy in Dessau after 1925, insisted that students strip a formal problem to its measurable variables before choosing a solution. Scale, light, dwell time, contrast. The composition came after the arithmetic, not before. That sequence is the principle that survived the school's closure in 1933 and every subsequent stylistic reinterpretation. Everything else — the primary palette, the sans-serif type, the asymmetric layout — is downstream of it and can be replaced without loss.

Which Scenario Is You

If you are designing something that will be read at walking distance, in an interruption context — a poster, a shopfront, an event board — you are in scenario one. Use the twelve-column arithmetic, honour the ten-millimetre cap floor, and let the diagonal do the saccade work.

If you are designing something held at reading distance, alongside a photograph or an image that will dominate — a spread, a card, a book cover with a portrait — you are in scenario two. Three columns, counter-weight arithmetic, and Moholy-Nagy's warning that the image will eat your composition unless you plan for it.

If you are designing something read at long distance by a moving crowd — a sign, a wayfinding board, a transit display — you are in scenario three. Abandon the grid, abandon the diagonal, abandon chromatic interaction. Value contrast and three stacked zones, or you have designed a decoration that fails as information.

Why use two hundred as the divisor for cap height?

The figure encodes an angular subtense of roughly seventeen arc-minutes, which is the threshold below which upper-case Latin letterforms lose their distinctive strokes for readers with twenty-twenty vision under average lighting. German rail typographers arrived at it in the 1930s; contemporary signage codes in the UK, Germany and the US all sit within ten per cent of the same number. It is a floor, not an optimum. Add margin for older readers, poor light, or high-motion contexts.

Did the Bauhaus itself teach this arithmetic?

Not in this form. Are twelve-column grids a Bauhaus invention?

No. Grid-based typography at the Bauhaus tended toward asymmetric compositions with fewer, larger fields, particularly in Herbert Bayer's work at the Dessau printing workshop. The strict multi-column grid is more accurately a Swiss International Style development of the 1950s under Müller-Brockmann and others. What the Bauhaus contributed was the underlying principle that a grid should be derived from function and scale, which the Swiss school then codified numerically.

Does the diagonal still work in a phone-screen context?

Rarely. A phone screen at held distance of thirty centimetres subtends a narrow angular cone, and a diagonal on a display roughly seventy millimetres wide subtends about thirteen degrees at most. That is inside foveal range but leaves almost no room for competing elements. On a phone, the diagonal becomes a full-canvas commitment, not a compositional device — closer to scenario three's constraints than scenario one's freedoms.

Why did chromatic simultaneous contrast collapse at long distance?

Because the perceptual effect depends on adjacent colour patches being resolved as distinct fields by the retina. Below the angular threshold at which two adjacent colours can be discriminated as separate, they blend optically and the interaction Albers spent decades demonstrating simply does not occur. At twelve metres, only high value contrast — light against dark — retains reliable perceptual weight, which is why long-range signage systems worldwide converge on the same restricted palette.

What is the practical upper limit on columns at A2?

Roughly sixteen, and only if secondary type is small and the sheet holds no long phrases. Sixteen columns at A2 with six-millimetre gutters and twenty-millimetre margins gives column widths of about nineteen millimetres — enough for a two-syllable word at fourteen point, not enough for a venue address. Twelve columns is the working ceiling for posters that must carry compound information. Above that, the grid becomes a modular unit for image placement rather than a typographic frame.

What did modernism get wrong about scale?

It sometimes assumed the principles were universal when they were distance-specific. Mid-century books on Bauhaus poster design often illustrate ideas with A2 or A1 examples and imply the same rules apply at any size — which is precisely the mistake the preliminary course was designed to prevent. Every rule in this piece has a distance envelope. Applied outside it, the rule stops describing form and starts producing decoration.
