Four books sit within reach of the workbench as we write. Not on a shelf, on the bench, which is the honest measure. If a book on proportion is not close enough to grab without standing up, it is decoration.
The first is Josef Albers, *Interaction of Color*. It is not, strictly, a book about proportion. It is a book about the ratio between two adjacent fields and how that ratio decides which colour wins. Read it that way and it becomes the single most useful proportion book in print. Albers taught at the Bauhaus preliminary course and later at Yale, and the exercises he set have a single instruction hidden inside them: change the size of one field and watch a colour you thought you knew become a colour you have never seen. The numbers vary from author to author, which is the first tell. The second tell is that no author explains why. Rules that cannot be justified are conventions in a hat. On the wall they produce rooms that look like other rooms.
Third offender, and this one hurts: several recent monographs on Bauhaus-inspired design. We will not name them because we know the people who wrote them. The pattern is consistent. Beautiful photography, competent essays on the school's history, and a section at the back on "how to bring Bauhaus principles into your home" that consists of colour-swatch mood boards and a list of chairs to buy. The advice is defensible as an average. It is also indifferent to what the print contains. A composition of nested arcs like our own *Archway* asks the eye to travel from the base of the frame to the apex, and that upward reading is defeated at a certain minimum height. Cut the height too short and the arcs stop rising. They start compressing. The print does not fail because it is small. It fails because a specific geometry needs a specific vertical to work, and no width-based hanging rule can tell you what that vertical is. Only the print can tell you, and only if you know how to ask.
The second place is grouping. Books that recommend gallery walls almost always propose a three-by-three grid of identically framed prints as a default. The default is easy to execute and produces a wall that reads as a checkerboard. Checkerboards are stable and dull. A composition like *Ascending Forms*, which is already about upward staged movement, cannot sit inside a nine-square grid without cancelling its own logic. The same two prints six centimetres apart on a small wall read as one object with a seam. *Dessau Morning*, with its horizontal bands and low sun, wants breathing room around it — the composition itself is quiet, and crowding it produces the opposite of its intent. *Foundation*, by contrast, is a poster of primary shapes and can hold a tighter neighbour without complaint. Six centimetres is not an answer. It is a shrug the trade has decided to charge for.
The real cost, then, is not measured in money. It is measured in prints that do less than they could, on walls that would have carried them further, in rooms whose owners can feel the disagreement without being able to name it. The reader who buys the wrong book usually does not know why the wall never quite sits. The wall is telling them. The book taught them not to listen.
